Is it the natural trust one feels in someone who, over the decades, has stayed in the same place—as if by promise—through song, words, and thoughts? When I sometimes hear your stories up close, I imagine, a little boldly, what it might have been like if we had met as friends of the same age. But as I turned the last page of the book, I thought how lucky I was to have met you, teacher, as a child who could hear those precious stories for free.”
