It’s a book called Educated: A Memoir. I recently picked it up and started reading, but I haven’t finished it yet. It’s quite a thick book. From what I’ve read so far, rather than recalling a short passage, what stays with me is how it offers a genuinely new perspective on the idea of learning. There’s an important passage here, so I’ll read it: “All the effort, all the years of study, had been to purchase this one privilege: to see and experience more truth than my father, and to use that truth to erect my own mind. To surrender now would mean more than losing an argument. It would mean losing ownership of my own mind.” The girl who is the protagonist grows up around anarchists, in a religious household, and never questions her family’s culture or education. As she gets older, she begins to look at herself objectively and becomes aware of what kind of education she received. Becoming aware of yourself is a privilege of adulthood: you can look at yourself objectively and reconsider your choices. It’s a book that tells this kind of moving story. I’ll keep reading and finish it; I’ve only read about half so far, but I recommend it.
