“A book one must read”

Siwon introduced that, after reading volume 1 of Park Jong-in’s *100 Scenes of Lost Modern History*, he is now reading volume 2. He explained that by cross-checking a range of historical records and research, the book makes us look again at the modern history we thought we knew well. He then stressed the importance of historical awareness, saying, “If we seek only comfort and a sense of self-vindication through false fantasies, that cold and bitter history will ultimately be repeated.” He said that however uncomfortable and painful history may be, we must face it as it is in order to move forward. Emphasizing that we look properly at the past not to remain there, but so future generations will not repeat the same history, he shared the thought that had come to mind most strongly as he read the book. Siwon said it contains stories that are difficult to encounter in textbooks. Recommending that anyone who likes history read it at least once, he called it “a book one must read,” expressing his strong recommendation.
