JA, a rapper and producer who also teaches students at KAC Korea Arts Institute, expresses these concerns about aspiring rappers: “I’ve seen many people who were good at rapping and talented but still didn’t succeed. They had talent, but were lazy or couldn’t manage themselves. I also saw many cases where people loved drinking so much that they couldn’t do their work.” (p. 176) Asked what a rapper needs to consider when making a living as a freelancer in the cultural and arts sector, rapper JJK, who runs a rap lesson class, replied, “Being able to control all 24 hours of your day yourself can become a driving force and create synergy, but, conversely, the anxiety that comes with that freedom can also grow. I think self-management is ultimately what calms that anxiety.” (p. 215) So how can aspiring rappers find out whether they have these qualities? Kim Yong-jun, head of HipHopplaya, the oldest hip-hop media company in South Korea, offers this advice: “Give it a try. Because it’s your life. You’ll find out by trying.” (p. 315) Deepflow’s advice is along similar lines: “Don’t try to anticipate and guess what will happen later. Rap right now. If you want to become a rapper, start by rapping!” (p. 137)
